Remington Manufacture Dates

From 1921 - 1972 Remington used a two or three letter code stamped on the barrel at the receiver end indicating the month and year of manufacture. The first letter indicates the month and the second letter or letters indicates the year.

MONTHLY CODES: YEARLY CODES: YEARLY CODES:   YEARLY CODES:
B January   M 1921 or 1965   B 1933 or 1955   PP 1945
L February   N 1922 or 1966   C 1934 or 1956   RR 1946
A March   P 1923 or 1967   D 1935 or 1957   SS 1947
C April   R 1924 or 1968   E 1936 or 1958   TT 1948
K May   S 1925 or 1969   F 1937 or 1959   UU 1949
P June   T 1926 or 1970   G 1938 or 1960   WW 1950
O July   V 1927 or 1971   H 1939 or 1961   XX 1951
W August   W 1928 or 1972   J 1940 or 1962   YY 1952
D September   X 1929   K 1941 or 1963   ZZ 1953
E October   Y 1930   L 1942 or 1964
R November   Z 1931   MM 1943
X December   A 1932 or 1954   NN 1944

This chart can be somewhat confusing because some letters in the yearly codes can mean two different years. However, if you own a Remington model 552A Speedmaster with a KJ stamp on it then you will know that it was manufactured in May 1962. The model 552A Speedmaster's were manufactured between 1959 to 1988.  If you own a Remington model 12C with a OT stamp on it then you will know it was manufactured in July 1926. The model 12C's were manufactured between 1909 to 1936. Notice how the month codes spell out BlackpowderX.

To tell the difference between a model 1894 and 1900 double shotgun, the best way is by the serial numbers. The model 1894 serial numbers will start with a (1) and the model 1900 will start with a (3). Some of the later model 1894's will have a "P" ahead of the serial number and some of the model 1900's will have a "Q" ahead of the serial numbers. Another difference is the model 1894 will have a Purdey (push button) forend fastener and the model 1900 has a Baker (snap on) forend fastener.

Manufacture dates can sometimes be found using a serial number or different codes stamped on the firearms. For further information we recommend the STANDARD BOOK OF FIREARMS by Ned Schwing and DATES OF MANUFACTURE series by D.R. and M.T. Morse. The STANDARD BOOK OF FIREARMS also provides a general guide for pricing, as well as, very detailed information on different firearms. The DATES OF MANUFACTURE series are great guides in a "pocket book" format that can be carried with you while visiting the shops and gun shows. A good source of the information was taken from these fine books. The links provided is for the purchasing of these books.
